Stand & Deliver

It's What We’re Watching Wednesday! This week, we were inspired by the film "Stand and Deliver."

This powerful film tells the true story of Jaime Escalante, a math teacher who challenges expectations in a predominantly Hispanic high school. Through unconventional methods, he empowers his students, including those written off as ""no-hopers,"" to excel in AP Calculus.

We won't spoil the ending, but let's just say get ready for some serious tears of joy! This is a must-watch for anyone who believes in the potential of every student. We especially love that when we go back and watch this classic, we find it stands the test of time. (Not all movies do, sometimes we watch them later and find they are cringe!) The reason? It didn't use tired tropes of white saviors saving poor kids from the hood. Instead it is a true story of a teacher who was himself an immigrant, dedicated to lifting up his community.

The Mauritanian

It's What We’re Watching Wednesday and this week we are recommending THE MAURITANIAN!

Based on Mohamedou Ould Slahi's bestselling memoir ""Guantánamo Diary,"" the film follows Slahi's harrowing journey as he fights for freedom after years of unjust imprisonment. ⚖️

Defense attorney Nancy Hollander and her associate Teri Duncan become his allies, battling the government in a relentless pursuit of justice. Their fight exposes shocking truths and tests their unwavering commitment to the law.

A powerful and thought-provoking film, The Mauritanian will make you reconsider long held beliefs. We must say we learned from this movie and we highly recommend expanding your horizons with subject matter you may not take in everyday.
