In the dream house

For “What we’re up to…” Wednesday we are recommending IN THE DREAM HOUSE: A MEMOIR, by Carmen Maria Machado.

We do want to provide a trigger warning, as the book chronicles an abusive relationship. However, Machado tells the story in short, personal vignettes, that feel more surreal than graphic. She breaks boundaries with her willingness to explore taboo topics and her references to fairytales, classic literature, and even pop culture, give us a chilling look into how we internalize stories – for better or worse.

That One Couple

It’s “What we’re up to…” Wednesday! Today we want to recommend That One Couple’s podcast hosted by our friends Jess Cruz-Abalos and Nelson Abalos. In their podcast, they combine and parallel the joys and challenges of parenting with the joys and challenges of being a creative. They interview other parent creators and share lessons learned, always with lots of laughter 😂.

FUN FACT: Jess is the fabulous designer who worked with our team on our new Axiomata blog insight infographics and sliders, along with designing our beautiful newsletter. 🥰

A Million Miles Away

For this week’s what we’re watching Wednesday, we are recommending A Million Miles Away.

This true-to-life story follows José Hernández on his journey from a village in Mexico, to becoming a migrant farmworker, to becoming a NASA flight engineer. Not only is the movie inspirational but it is also directed by #Latina Alejandra Márquez Abella, who shares screenwriting credits with Bettina Gilois and Hernán Jiménez. Movies written and directed by women and people of color make up a small fraction of major releases, so it is refreshing to see this positive story on screen.
